My girls.

I don’t know what made me say that, but they just rolled off my tongue like the most natural thing I’ve ever said. And I don’t feel bad about it. After the night Amber and I spent with each other, as far as I’m concerned, she’s mine. A week ago, I was ready to send this woman away. And now, I can’t think about her not being in our lives.

“Daddy. Are you going to just stand there or are you going to come watch? It’s about to be our favorite part.”

“Sure Princess. Let me go change and I’ll be right back.”

“Hey Gracie, how about we hit pause until Daddy comes back. I have to go get something from my room. That way none of us miss the movie.”

“Fine...” my 5-year old is so dramatic.

Hmmmm, Amber is following me toward the bedrooms? While we probably don’t have time for a quickie, I could sneak in a quick taste.

I wait for Amber as soon as I’m out of sight of Gracie. As she turns the corner, I grab her by the waist and kiss her like I haven’t seen her days, when it’s only been hours.

“Mmmm. Wait. Stop.” Well that wasn’t the greeting I was hoping for.

“Did I do something wrong. I thought this was your covert way of sneaking around?”

“No, well yes I should have thought of that, but no, that wasn’t the reason I followed you.”

She took a breath. I’m glad she’s learning to do that in between sentences.

“Did you pick up my clothes from the living room this morning? I remembered when Gracie and I went to put on the movie that we never picked them up, and they aren’t there. I was hoping you remembered this morning.”

Oh shit.

“Fuck… no I didn’t. I completely forgot. Did she find them?”

“No. That’s the thing. They weren’t there. They aren’t anywhere in the living room.”

“Maybe she just threw them in the laundry?”

“Do you really think Gracie, your daughter, is going to find things out of place and not ask 20 questions about it?”

She had a point.

“Listen. Don’t worry about it. They are probably under the couch or something. When she goes to bed tonight, we’ll look.”

This seems to calm her nerves and we head back downstairs.

“Daddy you didn’t change your clothes.”

Yup, Gracie definitely didn’t find Amber’s discarded clothes. The kid doesn’t miss a beat.

“I just wanted to get back here quicker. Now what part of it are we at?”

“She just used the dinglehopper.”

I’m only semi-ashamed I know what she’s talking about. But I couldn’t care less because I have my daughter snuggled to my side, and Amber on the other side of Gracie, but close enough for me brush my fingers on her shoulder. I can see many rainy days spent just like this.

Gracie dozed off with about a half hour left, but Amber and I were so zoned in on each other, even if it was just silent conversation, we didn’t bother turning off the movie.

“You two going to keep staring at each other or are you going to kiss her?”

This snaps us out of our trance.
